Travel
Accommodation
Penrith and Carlisle both have good accommodation options and are within a taxi ride of the venue. Budget accommodation options in Carlisle include Travelodge, ibis, Carlisle Station Hotel, and Premier Inn (a little further away from the rail station).
Getting here
Both Penrith and Carlisle are accessible by car via the M6 or train on several lines (e.g. London-Glasgow).
Planes
If flying into the UK, the nearest large airports for international flights are Manchester and Edinburgh, but there are also good train links to London airports. If you prefer to fly into London, we recommend Heathrow for connections to the Lake District rather than Gatwick or Stansted.
Trains
If travelling by train, we recommend that you allow plenty of extra time as there are frequent delays or even cancellations. We recommend downloading the Trainline app for ease of travelling, and potentially buying a Railcard if applicable (e.g. Two Together or age 26-30 cards). Note that while Dalston does have a train station, there is no safe pedestrian path all the way to Dalston Hall.
& Automobiles
There are plenty of parking spaces at Dalston Hall. The roads in Cumbria can be quite narrow with the occasional tractor traffic or sheep crossing - please be careful. Don't forget to drive on the left!
Taxis
There is a taxi rank outside of Carlisle Rail station, which is approximately a 10-minute taxi ride from the venue. We recommend that you carry cash as some drivers do not accept card.
Hike after the wedding
We are looking to go for a short and gentle hike in the Lake District the day after the wedding (after lunch, so you can sleep in!). You are all invited β please feel free to come along.
The route is up Catbells in a loop starting at Hawes End Pier. By car, there is nearby parking, but also car parking in Keswick, from which you can take the boat, 77A bus or walk. Keswick is reachable by the X5 bus from Penrith which itself is a short train ride from those staying at Carlisle. Carsharing is recommended, so make friends at the wedding and in the WhatsApp.
The whole route itself is classed as moderate and takes about 3-4 hours, with some non-technical minor scrambling, but it's a beautiful spot so even a picnic by the lake or half way up could be lovely.
We are in the process of setting up WhatsApp groups so drop us a line if you want to meet up for the hike.

If you prefer not to go for the hike, we will be having dinner and drinks afterward in a pub in Keswick (provisionally the Oddfellows pub but TBC). Why not spend the day at the nearby Pencil Museum in Keswick, or walk the Keswick-Threlkeld line (easy walk)?
